Conference on Mobility and Migration in Latin America

Conferencia Movilidad y migraciones en América Latina

On Thursday, July 4th, at 10h, we will be hosting the inaugural conference of the congress titled “Mobility and Migration in Latin America”. This event will take place in the Assembly Hall and is a collaborative effort between the Nebrija-Santander Global Chair in Migration and Human Rights at the University of Nebrija in Madrid, led by Professor Diego Acosta, and the IDRC Chair of Research in Migration and Forced Displacements at the Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, under the direction of Professor Luisa Feline Freier.

This conference will convene a distinguished group of experts specializing in international migration in Latin America. The aim is to explore the challenges posed by current empirical developments and to discuss the theoretical insights that academic analysis can bring to the topic.

The conference will commence with an opening address by the Honorable Ambassador of Colombia in Spain, Mr. Eduardo Ávila Navarrete. He will discuss Colombia's legal and political responses to the immigration of Venezuelan citizens.

Following a brief intermission for coffee, the conference will continue with a panel discussion featuring two distinguished speakers. First, Professor Jennifer Gordon from Fordham University in New York will present on the topic of full labor integration in displacement contexts. She will draw upon lessons learned from the experiences of Venezuelan refugees and migrants in Colombia and Brazil. Next, Rubén Giustiniani, a former Senator and Representative of the Argentine Republic, will reflect on the successes and challenges of the Argentine Migration Law, two decades after its enactment.

On the following day, Friday, July 5th, at 10h, we will host another inaugural panel in the Assembly Hall. This session will feature Andrew Seele, President of the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) in Washington. He will discuss various mechanisms for the protection of migrants in the Americas.

The event will be broadcasted online, and you can follow it through the provided links:
